Abstract
1,152,306. Twin screw extruder for foamed thermoplastics. LAVORAZIONE MATERIE PLASTICHE L.M.P. S.p.A. 3 May, 1968 [10 May, 1967], No. 21131/68. Heading B5A. Foamed thermoplastics articles are made by a twin screw extruder in which the screws rotate in the same direction, and which comprises a heating and mixing portion which is also designed to produce two spaced sealing plugs of the thermoplastic material at its upstream end, a metered supply for a fluid blowing agent in an intermediate portion and a homogenizing and cooling portion between the intermediate portion of the extruder and the die. Granular thermoplastics material is fed into the upstream end of the apparatus, melted and mixed in the first section, mixed with the blowing agent, cooled in the homogenizing section and extruded through the die; escape of blowing agent being presented by the plugs of thermoplastic material and by the viscosity of the material and the close meshing of the extruder screws in the outlet section. As shown the extruder comprises a barrel 10, two intermeshing screws 11, 12, an inlet 14 for granular thermoplastic resin, an inlet 22 for a metered flow of fluid blowing agent and a die 18. Heating coils 30A, 30B, 30C, 30D and cooling chambers 32, 32<SP>1</SP>, 32<SP>11</SP> are arranged along the outside of the barrel and cooling fluid is fed through tube 41 to the end of the hollow extruder screws, returns through section F in the space between the screw 11, 12 and tube 41 and passes through the rest of the screw between tube 41 and a tube 43 thermally insulated from the screw. Precompression and heating of the granular thermoplastic material starts in section A comprising coarse pitch screws 11A, 12A and heater 30A. The pressure on the material builds up between sections A and B as the pitch of the screws 11B, 12B in section B have a smaller pitch than screws 11A, 12A and the material is further heated and passed into free room 35. The screws 11C, 12C of section C have a reverse pitch of absolute value about the same as that of section B and gaps 36 are formed in the screw threads in a stepped relationship defining a helical path through the screw. These reverse threads cause a plug of thermoplastic material to form in space 35 and a similar plug in space 38 between sections D and E which are similar to B and C. Section E is not heated or may be cooled to assist absorption of the blowing agent at 20. The meshing screws 11F, 12F in section F mix the softened polymer and blowing agent thoroughly and also cool the polymer so that its viscosity on emerging from the nozzle 18 is sufficient to prevent collapse of the cells formed by the expanded blowing agent. The process and apparatus can be used to manufacture plates, slabs, bars and tubes from foamed thermoplastic resins, e.g. polyvinylchloride, polyvinyl acetate, polystyrene, polyamides and polyethylene.
