Crucible furnaces.-A furnace as described in Specification 114,684 is provided with means for preheating the charge comprising an upward extension of the cover with a hopper or refractory lining 5 having a depending internal extension 6 formed as part of the lining of the cover and preferably curved as shown in Fig. 5 so that the issuing gases become more intimately mixed with the charge in the hopper. A hinged top cover 19, Fig. 5, with a depending internal deflecting surface may also be fitted. For raising the main cover and swinging it clear of the furnace, a forked lever 9 engages with trunnions on the preheater and may be turned about a vertical post on a swivelling bracket to which it is pivoted. The bracket may be provided with a hinged detent to retain the lever in its operative position. The lever may be operated by a hand-wheel and screw as shown in Fig. 3. The lining of the cover may ue formed of segmental blocks secured by bolts passing through recesses in the radial joints. The application to a tilting furnace is illustrated in the Specification.
