Abstract

India-rubber, calendering.- Relates to a calendering or moulding machine for rubber comprising two or more sets of substantially horizontal rolls 41 - - 46, Fig. 1, the respective rolls being substantially in vertical alinement and capable of being separately adjusted or removed, independently heated, and driven so that the speed of any set may be changed independently of the other sets. They are preferably driven by a series of sprocket chains each of which is provided with a safetylink. As the stock passes from one set of rolls to the next, it may be deflected, for example, by off-set and yielding rollers 74, 75, so that the position of the bank may be controlled, and a yielding tension may be applied to the stock. This tension may be automatically indicated on a gauge 78 attached to a slide 76. For making sheets from which boot soles are to be cut, the roller 45 may be engraved and the nip at one end of the rollers may be greater than at the other, the heel portion being subsequently cut from this thick end. Fig. 4 shows one method of driving the rolls, any pair of which may be adjusted by means of screws 37 engaging with removable cheeks 39. To remove any set of rolls, the bolts 40 are unscrewed, whereby the cheeks 39 with the adjusting screws 37 may be detached so that the journals and rolls also may be removed. Fig. 1 also shows a preferred form of automatic feeding and folding device. The sheet of rubber 15 from the feed-rolls 7, 8 passes over a roller 14, between endless conveying belts 12, 13 to the folding-device 22, 26 which comprises a disk 22 and pair of rolls 26 set at right-angles to the roller 18. The sheet then passes over rollers 28, 72 to the calendering or moulding rolls. Reference is made to Specification 115,091.
