Abstract
1,151,930. Analysing liquids evolving gases; gas chromatographic system. PERKINELMER CORP. 26 Sept., 1966 [27 Sept., 1965], No. 42904/66. Headings B1L and D1X. [Also in Division G1] An open-ended vial (10) enclosing a dry porous support constituted by a roll of paper or like material (16, Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) impregnated with an acid, may be used in the analysis of a liquid (e.g. blood) in respect of a gas (CO 2 ) evolvedtherefrom by contact with an acid. As described, oxalic acid is employed, and by employing a paper or plastics vial, an integral construction may be provided. A desiccant 12 may be enclosed at one end of the vial between said roll and a cotton wool plug (14). As shown in Fig. 1, the impregnated roll is contained in tube 10 supported in holder 18 having a rubber septum 24 through which the liquid may be injected'. Air as carrier gas may be drawn by means of pump 44 through inlet line 28 and line 20 to tube 10 and thence to gas chromatographic column 34 (the integrating effect of which is said to even out any differences in sampling pulse width and decrease the variation in peak height with sampling variables) to measuring cell 38 of a thermistor-operated conductivity detector. The reference cell 36 is supplied with air through desiccant 40 and flow restrictor 42. Valves 30, 32 serve to isolate tube 10 when necessary. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates the electrical circuit used to determine and record results (see Division G1).
