Abstract

An apparatus for the continuous production of filter mouthpieces comprises means for moving a continuous band of porous smoke-filter paper in the direction of its length, shaping means by which spaced longitudinal crests are formed in the band, and means for feeding sections cut from continuous rods of smoke impervious material, of a cross-section complementary to that of the said crests, to the band at offset intervals along the same, on the one hand into the said crests and on the other hand to the spaces, between the crests, on the opposite side of the band to the said crests. As shown in Fig. 1a, a band 1 of filter paper is perforated by a roll 3 to produce slits 7, Fig. 4(a), flattened by rolls 10, 11, and progressively folded by plates 12, 13 to form three triangular peaks 14, Fig. 4(c) to (e). A cutting and feeding device 16 supplies sections 18, cut off from three continuous parallel paper wrapped and adhesive coated triangular plastics rods 19 produced as described in Specification 1,112,089. The sections 18 are fed at linear intervals by peripheral pockets in discs 20 on to the supper surface of a heat-sensitive adhesive-coated paper strip 21 previously activated by a heated feed roller 22 and thence the strip 21 with the adhered sections 18 is fed to a station 22 where the folded strip 1 is attached to its adhesive surface, as Fig. 4(f), by heated shaping rolls 22, 24. The edges of the assembled strips 1, 21 are trimmed by discs 25 and the assembly reheated by further shaped heating rolls 26. Triangular sections 29, cut from continuous wrapped triangular plastics rods 28, are then fed by pockets 37 of a roll 38 into spaces 30, Fig. 4(g) equidistant between the sections 18. Adhesive is then applied to the tips of the peaks 14 and rod sections 29, and the assembly passed to a heated rod-shaping die 43 where it is shaped to form a buttjointed cylindrical rod (44). A butt-jointed over-wrap is subsequently applied to the rod (44), the outer butt joint being offset from the inner one. After final sizing by circular heating and cooling dies (50, 51), the completed rod is cut at the mid-length of each of the positions where the triangular sections 18, 29 had been inserted to produce filter mouthpiece elements having alternate sectors longitudinally separated by sheet filtering material and closed, at opposite ends, by the halflengths of sections 18, 29, which mouthpieces are of the general kind disclosed in Specification 1,076,921.
