Abstract
1,151,580. Bis(cycloalkenyl) ethylenes. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 21 Oct., 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 47385/66. Heading C5E Non-conjugated bis(cycloalkenyl) ethylenes are prepared by contacting a compound of formula where one R<SP>1</SP> group represents a group of formula and the others are hydrogen, or a C 1 -C 10 alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkaryl or aralkyl group, each R<SP>11</SP> is hydrogen or a C 1 -C 10 alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl group, m is 3-10 inclusive and n is 0-4 inclusive, with a catalyst comprising a supported oxide of molybdenum or tungsten, said contacting being carried out at 25-300‹ C. and 0-1500 p.s.i.g. for at least 0À5 seconds. The examples describe the preparation of 1,2 - bis(3 - cyclohexen - 1 - yl) ethylene (B.C.E.) from 4-vinyl-cyclohexene with the formation of by-products which include 1- cyclohexenyl - 3 - cyclopentenylpropenes. The B.C.E. may be isomerized to 1-phenyl-2-cyclohexyl ethane which in turn may be dehydrogenated to form bibenzyl. This isomerization may be carried out with a supported platinum or palladium catalyst at 150-550‹ C. Stilbene may be formed by the dehydrogenation of B.C.E. with an alumina or chromia catalyst at 400- 800‹ C.
