[Also in Division C3] The invention comprises organic sulphonic acid metal salts of general formula wherein R 1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms, n has a value from 1-3, r has a value from 0-3 and X is hydrogen or Z, the sulphonated unit or radical of formula wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms, and M is an alkali metal, there being at least one X which is a Z unit. The above compounds and other organic sulphonic acid salts may be prepared by heating an alcohol, e.g. of formula (IV) or other appropriate alcohol such as glycerine, phenol, trimethylol ethane, or pentaerythritol, with a sultone of formula wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms, e.g. 1,3-propane sultone, 1,3-butane sultone, 1,3-isohexane sultone, 1,3- hexane sultone in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide, e.g. NaOH, KOH, LiOH, at a temperature of 50-120‹ C. and atmospheric, superatmospheric or sub-atmospheric pressure. The hydroxides may be employed in a large volume of organic medium such as PhH, PhMe, Xylenes to permit azeotropic distillation of the water in the reaction and thus prevent reversing of the reaction. In the compounds containing only one Z unit, e.g. A-Z, A is a monovalent organic radical such as an aliphatic, aromatic, araliphatic hydrocarbon radical or a substituted derivative thereof in which the substituents may be hydroxy, alkyl or alkoxy groups. In the compounds containing more than one Z unit, e.g. B(-Z)m, where m is greater 1; B is an appropriate polyvalent radical and may be an alkylene, arylene or aralkylene radical. The product is used in improving the dyeability of organic filament-forming polymers (see Division C3).
