An audio teaching aid comprises a master tape machine for reproducing programme material recorded on a master tape, a plurality of slave machines provided with individual controls producing, selectively, a playback condition in which signals recorded on a first track on a slave tape are played back to a student, a recording condition in which sounds picked up by a student's microphone are recorded on a second track on the slave tape, a fast wind condition, and a fast rewind condition, and means at a control position: (a) for producing simultaneous fast forward movement both of the master tape and of one or more slave tapes at a speed substantially higher than the slave-tape recording speed, and (b) for re-recording, on the first track of the or each slave tape, programme material then reproduced from the master tape. The higher speed is at least twice, and preferably of the order of four to ten times the normal speed. Preferably each machine (slave or master), has the mechanism of Fig. 2 of Specification 1,151,527. However, because the master machine needs only the higher speed for transfer of programme material to slave tapes, and will not be used for recording material on the master tape, the parts required for normal-speed forward movement may be omitted. The master console may have three machines working in conjunction with three groups of four slave machines. The slave machines may be mounted in a common rack, each student having only control buttons, head set, microphone and amplifier. Preferably, the rewind button causes rewind when depressed, and when released causes replay immediately.
