[Also in Division G5] A method of making a plate, sign or the like comprises adhesively applying a film or sheet of synthetic plastics material to one side of a thicker metal or plastics sheet of a contrasting colour, die pressing the combined sheet material so as to form raised characters in the thicker sheet material and to cut the thinner film or sheet around the characters, and removing those parts of the thinner film or sheet which overlie the raised characters to provide a contrast between the characters and the remainder of the finished sign, plate or the like. In making a vehicle number plate, black PVC sheet is applied to an aluminium sheet. Should the PVC sheet not be fully severed during pressing, the severing is completed manually.
