[Also in Division H2] A rotary electrical connection comprises a tubular body 13 including a pair of sleeves 14 connected by a central transverse web 16 which extends into a hub 15, axially aligned frustoconical pins 21, of e.g. coin silver or tellurium copper, and sets of segmental brushes 25, of silver-graphite, which engage contact surfaces 20, 22 on the sleeve 14 and the pins 21 respectively, the contact pressure between the brushes and the contact surfaces, being maintained by means of springs 30 which are electrically insulated from web 16 by insulating washers 29 and comprise resilient flanges radiating from annular plates mounted on opposite ends of an insulating bushing 28 in the web 16 by a bolt 31, a nut 32 and a lock washer 33. The body 13 is rotatably mounted in bearings 41 positioned at 42 and 43 with interposed insulation 44, 45 on a welding horn 10 and block 40 respectively. Each brush is wedged between the respective pin and the body and its sides abut adjacent blades 24 arranged in and project from axially elongated slots in sleeves 14. The pins 21 have shoulders 36 and mounting portions 35 engaging the horn 10 and block 40 at 37 and 38 respectively. A roller electrode 51, comprising a U-section portion 54 and a second portion 55 having an annular projection 56 with intervening annular sealing gaskets 57, 58, is seated on a projection 50 on the hub 15 and retained therein by a clamping nut 52. During a welding operation, a tubular body 75 is laid round the welding horn 10 and the block 40 and another roller electrode (not shown) co-operates with the roller electrode 51 to form a welded seam in body 75. The cooling arrangement comprises outlet and inlet ports 72 and passages 73 in the pin, space 74 between the blades 24, the brushes 25 and the pins 21, grooves 62, 67 which are connected on to the coolant passage 60 of the roller bearing by bores 63, 64, 65 (Fig. 4, not shown) and 68, 69, 70 respectively, the coolant passage 60 being separated by a web (61, Fig. 4, not shown) in order to assure circulation of the coolant. One of each set of brushes may have greater proportion of graphite than the rest to minimize friction between the contacting surfaces.
