Abstract

1,150,207. Logarithmic circuits. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 5 Sept., 1967 [6 Sept., 1966], No. 39818/66. Heading G4G. [Also in Division H1] A logarithmic function generator, used in combination with a mass spectrometer-electron multiplier arrangement wherein the product of the monitor collector current of the mass spectrometer (at MC, Fig. 1, not shown) and the electron multiplier gain is required to be constant, comprises semi-conductor diode D1 having a logarithmic voltage/current characteristic, the voltage drop across same being backed off by adjusting the potentiometer R4 when the input is below a required minimum value but otherwise amplified by transistors Q 1 , Q 2 , Q 3 and resistors R 7 to R 12 (Q 4 , R 13 and R 14 providing the correct D.C. level of the emitter of Q 3 ). The output voltage is developed across resistors R 12 , R 13 and R 14 , while R 16 and R 17 together form the third adding resistor RA 3 (Fig. 1, not shown) by means of which the output of the function generator is made to control the effective reference voltage for the stabilizer (VS) supplying the electron multiplier supply voltage.
