Abstract

115,002. Helson, G. F. Dec. 31, 1917. Bottling.-In apparatus for filling bottles or like receptacles with liquid condiments such as ground spices, &c., the liquid &c. is drawn by suction from the supply reservoirs into the bottles, and any surplus or overflow of liquid passes to overflow receptacles from which it is returned to the supply reservoirs. A double-acting machine with two supply reservoirs and two overflow receptacles to fill four bottles simultaneously is shown. The bottles 117, Figs. 1 and 2, to be filled are supported on a shelf 36, which is vertically adjustable in grooves 35 in vertical members 34 at the ends of a platform 18. This platform has guidepins 19 on its under side to engage in brackets 16 on the upright frame 10, and is raised and lowered by means of a shaft 14 operated by a treadle 26. The delivery tubes 98, Fig. 5, extend through tubes 9, and communicate with the reservoirs 12, 13 by means of valved pipes 96 and pipes 88, 89, 92, 94. The closed glass overflow receptacles 54, 55 are supported on a shelf 56 at the upper part of the frame 10, and vertical pipes 65 extending to the upper part of the receptacles are connected by valved pipes 62 to a pipe 59 which leads to the exhausting-apparatus. Pipes 103, which extend down through the tubes 9 alongside the delivery tubes 98, are connected by pipes 86, 82, elbow-joint 79, and pipes 75, 72 to pipes 69, Fig. 6, which extend up into overflow receptacles and have their ends bent over to lie near the bottoms of the receptacles. A threeway cock 77 in the pipe 55 is operated by a rod 115 and lever 116 from an arm 25 on the shaft 14, and the joint 79 is fitted with a clack valve 80. Vent-pipes 104 terminating near the upper ends of the receptacles 54, 55, and drain-pipes 107 extending from the receptacles to the reservoirs 12, 13, are fitted with valves 106, 109 respectively. The valves 63, 64 in the pipes 62, and the valves 71, 106, and 109 are connected by links 110 to a bar 111 which is operated by a pivoted hand-lever 112. In operation, the bar 111 is moved either to the right or left according to which of the overflow receptacles is to be used. The treadle 26 is then depressed to bring the mouths of the bottles 117 on the shelf 36 up to the delivery tubes 98 and to open the cock 77. The receptacle 54 or 55 having been exhausted of air, the valve 80 rises and places the bottles 117 in communication with the exhaust so that liquid flows from the reservoirs past the valves 102 in the pipes 96 into the bottles. Any liquid drawn into the tubes 103 passes to the overflow receptacles by the pipe 69, and when the liquid rises in this receptacle to a predetermined height, the bar 111 is moved in the opposite direction to open the valves in the vent-tube 104 and drain-pipe 107 and allow the liquid to pass to the corresponding reservoir 12 or 13. When the treadle 26 is released, the platform 18 descends and a row of empty bottles is brought into position on the shelf 36 by a bar 39, which is mounted in uprights 28, 41 and rocked by a crank 31 and rod 32 from the shaft 14. Simultaneously the filled bottles are pushed down a shoot 43 on to a table 46 over which the delivery conveyer 52 passes.
