Abstract

1,149,526. Catalytic polymerization of styrene and its substitution products. BRITISH INDUSTRIAL PLASTICS Ltd. 22 Sept., 1966 [30 Sept., 1965], No. 41553/65. Heading C3P. Styrene or its substitution products (as defined below) are polymerized in the presence of a catalytic amount of antimony pentafluoride or complex thereof. The substituted styrenes are defined as α- or #-substituted styrenes, the #-substituent may be linked to the phenyl ring of the styrene to form a ring, and ring substituted styrenes in which the ring substituents may also form another ring, e.g. α-methyl-, α-phenyl- or o-, m- and pmethylstyrene, stilbene, indene, coumarone, acenaphthylene, anethole or 1- or 2-vinyl naphthalene. The catalyst may be a complex of antimony pentafluoride with diethyl ether, methyl or ethyl cyanide or 1,1,2- trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoro-ethane; or triphenylmethyl hexafluoroantimonate. The polymerization may be carried out in bulk or in methylene chloride or heptane.
