Abstract
1,148,812. Measuring dimensions. CENSOR, PATENT-UND VERSUCHSANSTALT. 19 April, 1966 [22 April, 1965], No. 17134/66. Heading G4H. In apparatus for measuring dimensions of the type in which each object to be measured on entering a gauge displaces a sensing head, the displacement of the sensing head being converted into an electrical signal, master specimens are periodically introduced into the gauge, the electrical signals then generated being used to correct errors in the measuring apparatus due to changes of, for example, temperature. In the embodiment described (Fig. 2) the objects are fed from a hopper 1 to a turntable 3 on which they are carried to the gauge 9. A sensing head 8 which is displaced upwardly by the object moves a core 11 so that the self inductance of two coils 12, 13 is altered and consequently the amplitude of the A.C. voltage applied to an amplifier 23. This voltage after rectification controls an indicating instrument 26 and bi-stable devices 27-32, each bi-stable device corresponding to a predetermined value of the voltage. One of the solenoids 34-39 is then actuated to move its associated deflector blade 134-139 so that the object in the gauge falls into the right container. When a master specimen is measured a switch 154 is altered so that the electrical signal generated is applied to bi-stable devices 327-331. If the bi-stable device 329 is energized indicating that the apparatus is functioning normally additional test specimens are fed to the turntable 3. If either of the bi-stable elements 328 or 330 are energized a pulse is applied to stepping motor 57 to move the slide of a potentiometer 16 through one step. The master specimen is then again measured and the process repeated until the meter registers the required norm. If however either of the bi-stable devices 327 or 331 are energized the drive of the testing apparatus is de-energized. Intermediate containers may be included (Fig. 3, not shown) so that if the measuring apparatus is incorrect the specimens which have been measured since the previous master specimen was fed to the machine may be re-tested.
