Abstract

1,148,576. Electro conductive metal-glass coatings. OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc. 27 April, 1966 [27 April, 1965], No. 18347/66. Heading C1M. To form a coating of a precious metal on the surface of a glass article, the article is first coated with a sealing glass composition consisting essentially of a lead borate glass, heated to a temperature not exceeding 460‹ C., between the melting temperature of the sealing glass and the annealing temperature of the glass article, to adhere the glass coating to the article and then powdered precious metal particles are deposited on the sealing glass and heated to a temperature not exceeding 460‹ C. to melt the sealing glass to secure the metal particles thereto, the sealing glass having a coefficient of thermal expansion slightly less than that of the glass article. The precious metal is preferably silver. The sealing glass may be vitreous and consist of in wt. percentages PbO 67-73; B 2 O 3 11- 21; ZnO 0À5-11; CnO 0À5-11; SiO 2 2-6 or a devitrifiable glass consisting of PbO 70-80; ZnO 7-14; B 2 O 3 7-10; SiO 2 1-3; BaO 0- 8; CuO 0-8. Small amounts of SnO 2 up to 2 and Bi 2 O 3 up to 4 may be added. The glass article may have the composition SiO 2 64À53; Al 2 O 3 4À03; CaO 1À1; MgO 1; BaO 10À6; Na 2 O 8À1; K 2 O 10; Sb 2 O 3 0À2 and F 2 0À3. The coatings are particularly used for forming metallic stripes on the funnel and neck portions of cathode ray tubes.
