Abstract

1,148,377. Flail-mowers; sweeping lawns. TURNER ENG. CO. (COUGHTON) Ltd. 6 Dec., 1966 [8 Dec., 1965], No. 51961/65. Headings A1E and A1F. A manually-guided flail-mower comprises a wheeled frame 10 supporting a motor 13 which drives the flail-shaft 19 and a handle 15 for manual guidance of the mower. The frame is mounted on a pair of tyred wheels 12 which are driven from the motor. The flail-shaft 19 is journalled in a hood 17 mounted on wheels 20 and is driven from the motor 13 through a belt or chain transmission 21, 22. The hood may be modified to provide a collecting box extending along the length of the hood, the device being then usable for collecting and shredding fallen leaves in Autumn. Clutches may be provided in both the drive to the flail-shaft and to the wheels and a variable-speed drive is provided adjustable by a gear-lever 16. The flail-shaft 19 has a series of strips 27 welded along its length and apertured to receive the bent-over ends 29 of U-shaped stirrups 28 on which the flail-knives 34 are freely pivoted. Spring clips 30, 31 are inserted through holes in the ends 29 detachably to retain the stirrups in position.
