Abstract

1,148,368. Amplifiers. ZELTEX Inc. 18 July, 1967 [1 Sept., 1966], No. 33004/67. Heading H3W. In an operational amplifier of the type in which the D.C. working conditions are stabilized by means of a subsidiary chopper-type amplifier, feedback is provided around the chopper amplifier which is not operative for normal linear operation of the system, but comes into operation upon overload. An embodiment comprises amplifier system 11 provided with series input resistor R in and overall negative feedback via resistor R feedb to summing junction 27. Amplifier system 11 comprises series resistor R 1 connected to junction 21, from which A.C. components are fed over capacitor 38 to input 51 of input stage 36. The D.C. components are filtered off by RC network 32, 29 and applied to a chopper-type amplifier comprising input resistor 33 and chopper 31 feeding via capacitor 25 an A.C. amplifier 23. The output of amplifier 23 passes via capacitor 20 to output chopper 34, the output of which is smoothed by resistor R f and capacitor C f and applied to the second input 52 of input stage 36. Input stage 36 feeds output stage 22. In such an arrangement, momentary overload causes capacitor C f to be charged up and this blocks the operation of the amplifier for an appreciable time-interval before the capacitor becomes discharged again. To prevent such overloading occurring negative feedback is applied around the amplifiers 23, 36 by means of a feedback path to junction 21, comprising an auxiliary amplifier 14 which may be of unity gain, and reversely connected diodes 17, 18 which provide that feedback only occurs when normal signal levels are exceeded.
