Abstract
1,148,078. Aromatic oxy-sulphonyl-isocyanates. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 15 June, 1966 [15 June, 1965], No. 26643/66. Heading C2C. The invention comprises an organic oxysulphonyl-isocyanate containing at least one aromatic radical wherein one or more aromatic ring carbon atoms carry an oxy-sulphonylisocyanate group of the formula They may be obtained either by heating an aromatic compound in which one or more aromatic ring carbon atoms carry a -CO-NH-SO 2 Cl group to a temperature not less than 80‹ C., or by heating an aromatic compound containing at least one phenolic hydroxy group with at least an equivalent amount of ClSO 2 NCO to a temperature not less than 80‹ C. Either reaction is preferably carried out in an inert solvent or diluent. The starting materials may be selected from mono- and poly-hydroxy phenols, naphthols; hydroxyanthracenes, hydroxy derivatives of stilbene and diphenylene oxide; or the corresponding carbamic acid ester-N-sulphochlorides, and may bear one or more substituents selected from alkyl, aryl, NO 2 , CN, N=N, carbalkoxy, alkoxy and sulphonyl groups and halogen atoms. Examples are given for the production of the compounds. They are useful as intermediates in the preparation of various organic synthetic materials. A by-product of the formula may be formed by the reaction of phenol and phenoxy-sulphonyl isocyanate formed in the above process.
