An electric router having a replaceable cutting tool 31 comprises a generally cylindrical casing 16 having upper and lower ends, an electric motor 56 within the casing and having a tubular armature 14, a chuck 34 at the lower end of the casing received within the armature for selective relative axial movement and co-operating therewith for releasably securing the cutting tool, and slip coupling means for axially moving the chuck relative to the armature and including a rotary knob 96 mounted on the upper end of the casing for movement axially thereof between a normal inoperative position and an operative position wherein a cutting tool is automatically released and secured upon rotation of the knob. The casing has a pair of uprights 20, 22 between a base 18 and a cylindrical portion 24 which receives a screw-threaded part 26 of a housing for the motor 56. The housing can be rotated in the part 24 for adjusting the depth of cut of the tool and an adjusting ring 38 is provided to control the depth of cut; a locking means is provided to secure the part 26 in the portion 24. The rotor 58 of the motor is mounted on the tubular armature 14 which is supported by bearing 40, 46 in the part 26. The lower end of the armature receives a collet 34 keyed by a pin 114 and slot 112 to the armature. The collet is attached by a removable pin 106 to an operating rod 104 which at its upper end is in screwthreaded engagement with a nut 83 on armature 14 and formed with a polygonal extension 102. A sleeve 84 is urged by a spring 42 to an upper inoperative position and rotatably supports the knob 96 which on its under surface has a polygonal recess 100. When the knob is depressed, the sleeve 84 engages nut 83 to hold armature 14 against rotation and the recess 100 engages extension 102 so that, upon rotation of knob 96 in its depressed position, the rod 104 and chuck are rotated and thereby axially moved to release the tool 31 in the chuck 34. A flexible collar excludes dust from the mechanism. The rotor of the motor is engaged by brushes 64 disposed in radial extensions 66, 68 on the motor housing 26, and each extension is formed at its outer end with a handle 74, 76. Each handle includes a switch 80, 82, the switches being connected in series so that an operator must have a hand on each handle and switch before the motor is energized. One of the switches may, in addition, control the speed of the motor.
