Abstract

1,147,594. Producing polyoxymethylene filaments. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 1 April, 1966 [1 April, 1965], No. 14636/66. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] Polyoxymethylene filaments are produced by dissolving a polyoxymethylene having a molecular weight of 20,000 to 125,000 or a copolymer thereof containing not less than 90% by weight of polyoxymethylene, the polyoxymethylene or the copolymer thereof having an inherent viscosity of 0À8 to 2À5, in a polar organic solvent having a boiling point above 160‹ C. at a temperature up to 160‹ C. and extruding the solution through a multi-orifice spinneret at a temperature within the range 80 to 160‹ C. into a coagulating medium and stretching the filaments at an elevated temperature advantageously within the range 100 to 140‹ C. The solution may be extruded into a heated spinning cabinet through which a preheated inert gas is passed on into a precipitating bath. The inherent viscosity is calculated according to the formula the viscosity of a 0À5% solution of the polymer in p-chlorophenol being measured at 60‹ C. The solvent may be N,N-dimethyl-acetamide, N- methyl pyrrolidone (both used in the examples), N,N-dimethylformamide, butyrolactone, w-cresol, p-chlorophenol, dimethylsulphoxide, tetramethylene sulphone, or hexamethylphosphoric acid amide. The polyoxymethylene has a molecular weight of preferably 30,000 to 85,000 and its inherent viscosity is preferably 1À0 to 2À0. The polyoxymethylene may be a formaldehyde polymer having end groups stabilized by esterification, or a copolymer of trioxane, e.g. trioxane-dioxolane, trioxane-oxthiolane, trioxane-1,3,-dioxane or a trioxane-epichlorhydrin copolymer with a comonomer content of 0À1 to 10%, preferably 1 to 5%. In the production of the filaments by wet spinning the precipitation medium may advantageously be an alcohol of relatively high boiling point such as butanol, octanol, glycerine, ethylene glycol or hexanetricol. The filaments may be stretched in the precipitation bath. The spun filaments still contain about 0À5 to 5% of the spinning solvent and may therefore be stretched at stretch ratios up to 15: 1 without breakage.
