1,147,251. Photo-electric turbidity measurement. NETHERLANDS APPLIED SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH FOR INDUSTRY, TRADE & COMMERCE. May 3, 1967 [May 3, 1966], No.20542/67. Heading G1A. The concentration of solid or liquid particles suspended in a liquid or gas is measured by passing the suspension through a flow chamber and photo-electrically measuring the ratio of light scattered to light transmitted, by the suspension. The apparatus, which is suitable for investigating heavy concentrations of suspended matter e.g. fibrous suspensions used in paper manufacture, comprises a through-flow space 1 having parallel glass walls 2, 3. The adjacent box 5 having white light diffusing walls, is illuminated by sources contained in holders 9, 10. Light scattered by the suspension is detected by a photo-cell and optical system 13, and the photocell output corrected for the ambient light level in the box 5 by the output of a further detection system 15. Light transmitted by the suspension is measured by system 19 located in a box 16 with blackened walls. The two detector output signals are combined to obtain the above mentioned ratio. A flow chamber having two different widths may be provided to obtain measurements compensated for the effect of the colour of the suspended particles at higher concentrations.
