Abstract

1,147,093. Railway ballast clearing. KERSHAW MFG. CO., Inc. 12 May, 1967 [6 Sept., 1966], No. 22208/67. Heading E1G. Debris and excess ballast between and alongside a rail track 12 is (1) picked up by a self-propelled machine 10 incorporating a scarifier 70, rotary brush 14 and bucket conveyer 18; (2) deposited on to a belt conveyor 22 adjustably supported on a wheeled frame 33 through a cable 42 and winch 39; and (3) discharged at selected positions into a truck 31, the truck 31 and frame 33 being pushed along a track by a variable length bar 49 coupled to the machine 10. The bar 49 comprises three tubes 51, 52, 53 which can be selectively collapsed into the base of the frame 33, the various conveyer discharge positions being selected by locking the tubes in extended, partly-extended or collapsed position by removable transverse bars. Extension-limiting rods, are provided within the telescopic tubes. The forward end of the conveyer is supported on the truck walls through grooved rollers 26, its rear end being pivoted to a turntable 24 on the machine 10 beneath the discharge hopper 21 of the bucket conveyer 18. The height of the scarifier 70 and brush 14 is adjustable and rear ploughs 10 on each side of the machine 10 are adjustably positioned by hydraulic rams.
