Abstract

1,147,063. Electro-physical measurement control. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 18, 1966 [May 27, 1965], No. 22602/65. Heading G1N. [ Also in Divisions G4 and H3] The angular position of a winch or winding drum of winding or haulage equipment is controlled in accordance with the phase difference between an A.C. signal produced in dependence on the position of the winch or drum and a reference A.C. signal. The rotor of a transmitter Selsyn ST1, Fig. 1, whose single phase winding is connected to an A.C. supply, is mechanically connected to the winder drum and electrically, through switch S1, to a receiver Selsyn SR1, whose rotor is positioned at the required angular position of the drum. The output from Selsyn SR1, whose amplitude and phase sense represents the instantaneous difference in position of the rotors of the two Selsyns, is fed to a phase sensitive rectifier, Fig.2 (not shown), (see also Division H3), whose D.C. output, in magnitude and polarity, depends on the amplitude and phase sense of the input to the rectifier and therefore on the relative shaft position. This signal is passed through a shaping circuit, Fig. 4 (not shown), (see also Division G4), to a circuit which controls the drive to the drum. The speed and direction of drive depends on the amplitude and polarity of the signal from the shaping circuit. For haulage and winding equipment in which the winder drum is arranged to stop at various positions, the transmitter Selsyn is connected, via switches S1, S3-S5, to one of a number of receiver Selsyns SR1-SR3, one for each stopping position. The operation of the switches may be manual, the switches being operated in conjunction with the winder driver's control levers, semi-automatic, when the switches are controlled from level selection circuitry controlled from selection push buttons at control stations, or fully automatic, when the switches are set automatically for the next stopping position when one stopping position is arrived at. For a winder with two independent drums each is provided with a transmitter Selsyn ST1, ST2 and each is connected to the main drive-shaft by a clutch to permit independent movement. A position error detector, Fig. 7 (not shown), (see also Division H3), for supervising stopping at each station, is provided in the circuit, which detects the magnitude of the error voltage and, when this is very small, causes the removal of power from the winder and control circuits and the application of the winder brake.
