Abstract

1,147,023. Determining water content of oil electrically. NIPPON OIL CO. Ltd. April 12, 1966 [April 12, 1965], No.15952/66. Heading G1N. Apparatus for measuring the water content of oil comprises a capacitor C 2 immersed in the oil and connected in a transformer bridge with a first variable capacitor C 0 (which is adjusted to balance the bridge when capacitor C 2 is immersed in waterfree oil) and a second variable capacitor C 1 having rotatable blades which are continuously driven by hand or motor 7 synchronously with a triangular wave generator 8, Figs.3, 4 (not shown). The output of the bridge passes through an amplifier 3 to a phase detector 2 and bi-stable circuit 6. A relay R L closes a switch S L when the output of the phase detector exceeds a first predetermined level and opens the switch when the output drops below a second predetermined level. When switch S L is closed, the wave generator 8 is connected to a recorder 9. The position of the rotary blades of capacitor C 1 at balance (and hence the recorded part of the output of the wave generator) depends on the water content of the oil. The recording, Fig.5 (not shown), comprises a series of M-shaped pulses, the height of which is proportional to the water content of the oil. A suitable frequency for the oscillator 1 is 1 kc. /s.
