Abstract

1,146,641. Coating polyester resins. INSTYTUT TWORZYW SZTUCZNYCH. 9 June, 1966 [9 June, 1965], No. 25657/66. Heading C3R. [Also in Division B2] A polyester resin is prepared by heating a macromolecular polyester of terephthalic acid with a glycol and a trihydric alcohol at 200- 290‹ C. Polyethylene terephthalate waste is suitable. Suitable alcohols are ethylene, 1 : 2- and 1 : 3-propylene, 1 : 3- and 1: 4-butylene and diethylene glycols; glycerol and trimethylolpropane. The alcoholysis is preferably carried out in the presence of pigments and/or thixotropes. The product resin has M.W. about 1000, and is preferably powdered after cooling. Hardeners, e.g. butyl polytitanate, cresolblocked tolylene diisocyanate trimer or the reaction product of trimethylolpropane with phenol-blocked tolylene diisocyanate. In examples polyethylene terephthalate is heated with ethylene or propylene glycol and glycerol i.p.o. PbO, ZnO or LiCI to give a product having a softening point 100-110‹ C. The product is cooled and powdered to a particle size below 0À2 or 0À3 mm., either directly (Ex. 1) or after addition of cresol-blocked tolylene diisocyanate trimer (Ex. 2) or butyl polytitanate (Ex. 3). Active silica is added before or after alcoholysis. The powders are used to coat metals by fluidization or electrostatic spray techniques.
