The bond strength of cord filaments, e.g. nylon or viscose rayon, to an unsaturated elastomeric copolymer of ethylene or propylene with one or more α-olefines and one or more polyenes or to a rubber mixture containing such a copolymer is improved by impregnating the cord filaments with a mixture contaning (a) an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of ethylene or propylene, one or more α-olefines and one or more polyenes having 2.5-20 carbon-carbon double bonds per 1000 carbon atoms, (b) an aqueous dispersion of a homopolymer or vinylpyridine or a substituted vinyl pyridine and (c) an aqueous solution of a rescrcinol formaldehyde resin, the weight ratio of copolymer to polyvinylpyridine being 99.9:0.1 to 60:40, drying them, contacting them with the copolymer or rubber mixture and vulcanising. Monomers used to prepare the copolymers include α-butylene, α-pentene, hexadiene-1,5, hexadiene-1,4, dicyclopentadiene, cyclooctadiene, methylcyclooctadiene, 1,4,9- decatriene and 1,2,4-trivinylcyclohexane. The mixtures used for the treatment may be produced by mixing solutions of the copolymer and polyvinylpyridine in benzene, dispersing the resulting solution in water containing an emulsifier, e.g. an alkylarylsulphonate, alkylsulphonate, alkyl sulphate or condensation product of a phenol or alcohol with ethylene oxide, distilling off the benzene, optionally heating at 50‹-100‹C for several hours and concentrating the mixture to the desired solids content, or by preparing dispersions of the copolymer and polyvinylpyridine separately and then mixing them and optionally heating for several hours at 50‹-100‹C. The solution of the rescorcinol-formaldehyde resin is added to these mixtures. The rubber mixtures may also contain fillers, e.g. carbon black, plasticisers, e.g. mineral oils, metal oxides, e.g. zinc oxide, organic acids, e.g. stearic acid, vulcanising agents, e.g. sulphur and vulcanisation accelerators, e.g. tetra methyl thiuram monosulphide.
