Abstract

[Also in Division A2] Apparatus for making filled sweets comprises a container 4, from which filling composition 2 is fed to a pump, which may comprise a cylinder 18 and a reciprocating piston 6, or may be a twin-piston pump. The pump forces the filling composition through a tempering device 24 and a pipe 48, which is connected to a filling pipe 58 surrounded by a ring of conical rollers in a strand-extruder 54, of known type. A sugarcontaining coating composition 56 is fed into the space between the pipe 58 and said ring of conical rollers. The outlet 60 of the pipe 58 is near the output end of the extruder 54, from which emerges a continuous strand of filling composition coated with a jacket of sugar composition. This strand is then divided into sweets. The tempering device 24 preferably comprises a heated cylindrical vessel 26 surrounding a roller 44 having, in its cylindrical surface, spiral grooves 46. The roller 44 is rotated so as to propel filling composition back towards the pump, but a non-return valve 22 is provided to prevent this back-flowing composition from entering the pump. The backflow in the tempering device prevents formation of air bubbles in the filling composition. The vessel 26 may be heated by feeding a heated fluid, such as hot water or steam, through a surrounding jacket space 28. A valve 34 may be provided in the pipe 32 supplying heated fluid to the jacket space. Actuation of the valve 34, and consequentially the temperature of the filling composition in the tempering device 24, may be under the control of a temperature measuring device having a temperature senser 50 in the pipe 48. Stirring blades 62, which are rotatably driven from the shaft of the roller 44, may be provided in the container 4.
