Abstract

114,561. Rollason, A. Aug. 7, 1917 Extracting.-A charge of mill scale, iron sand, magnetic iron ore, or other oxidized form of iron is added together with finely-ground coal, coke, or charcoal to a relatively small quantity of molten pig iron or steel scrap in a furnace. A thick layer of a non-oxidizing siliceous slag, preferably from an acid-lined converter, or hard roasted dolomite, is next added to prevent the carbon of the charge from taking up oxygen from the atmosphere. After addition of the slag, the temperature of the charge is raised. During the reaction, the iron oxide of the charge is reduced and the iron takes up a little carbon; by the addition of reagents in the usual way, this iron is decarburized and refined, and by the addition of alloys and other elements is converted into steel. The quantity of the molten metal into which the mill scale &c. is charged may be from 5 per cent to 25 per cent of the charge.
