1,145,489. Magnetic recording and playback. BUREAU D'ETUDES SCIENTIFIQUES ET TECHNIQUES. 13 April, 1966 [13 April, 1965], No. 16249/66. Heading G5R. Pulses of information separated by comparatively long pauses are recorded as erased portions interrupting a continuous prerecorded signal of a particular frequency, the record bearing also a reference track comprising a continuous prerecorded signal of the same frequency. On playback, both signals are read out to r comparator to produce a difference signal which is then demodulated. The comparator is used also for testing to ensure that the prerecorded signal is the same on both tracks, controlling lamps or other signals accordingly. The prerecording is carried out at a normal tape speed and the playback at a higher speed on the same apparatus, the pulse recording being effected at a much lower tape speed on a second apparatus in which the incoming pulses control a gated amplifier to which an erasing signal is fed.
