The process of the parent Specification 1024314 for the preparation of catalysts comprising Co or Ni and .activated carbon, in which the activated carbon is pretreated with HNO 3 , impregnated with aqueous Co(NO 3 ) 2 or Ni(NO 3 ) 2 , all the water removed, suspended in a fluidised bed by means of an inert gas under conditions of increasing temperature, the bed is saturated with water when the tempera-' ture reaches 180-220‹C. the heating is continued until all the water has been removed and thereafter the temperature is raised to not more than 300‹C to complete decomposition is modified in that the final decomposition is effected at 300-600‹C.
