Abstract

1,145,156. Evaporating borohydrides. DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT. 3 March, 1966 [5 March, 1965], No. 9406/66. Heading C1A. A solution of an alkali metal borohydride is evaporated by dropping it on to a heated circulating bed of the borohydride to give a granular product. The solvent may be liquid NH 3 , a C1-4 aliphatic amine, e.g. n-propylamine, or a polyether, e.g. diethylene glycol dimethylether. Evaporation may be effected at normal, reduced, or excess pressure. In the example, a solution of NaBH 4 is added continuously to an agitated bed of NaBH 4 heated in N 2 to 70-80‹ C. in a kettle. Alternatively, the solid may be passed through a rotating tube from a lower to a higher temperature in countercurrent to an inert gas which carries off the solvent vapours. The solvent may be condensed and recovered. 0À1-0À2% water may be added to the initial solution. Water-soluble impregnants, or dyes, or substances which react with borohydride in water, may be added continuously or in batches during evaporation. Particle size distribution of the product is given (mainly 0À25-0À75 mm.).
