[Also in Division G1] Sulphate ion in a wet process phosphoric acid slurry is determined by mixing the liquid phase of the slurry with an excess of barium ion in a tank 1, applying the mixture to a moving band filter 7 and measuring the amount of barium sulphate deposited on the filter 7 by its absorption of X-rays or #-rays from a source 15. Spray bars 11 and vacuum filter boxes 10, 12, 13 are provided for washing the barium sulphate and removing excess liquid therefrom. The filter 7 may be a continuous textile strip or a disposable filter paper. When using #-rays, the source 15 is strontium 89 and the detector 14 is a scintillation counter.
