Abstract
114,471. Smith, A. W.April 3, 1917. Turning; turrets; gauging-devices. - The figures show a vertical tool-turret from which the tool-holding device 21 can be removed and replaced by another without disturbing the setting of the tools, while any tool can be removed or re-set without affecting the others. The fixed part 13 which is provided with two bearings 14, 15 can be secured to the ordinary cress slide 11 or to a special slide and saddle. The tool-holding device 21 is secured by a nut on the reduced threaded end of a spindle 19 which passes through a hollow tapered mandrel 18, fixed in the bearing 14, and through the rear bearing 15 and has at its rear end a disk 39 carrying an adjustable stop 40 for each tool. These stops engage with a fixed abutment 41 to limit the movement of the turret. To fix the head 21 after adjustment it is drawn on to the tapered end of the-mandrel 18 in which position a fixed pin 37 in the bracket fits into one of a series of holes in its rear face. To unlock the head, a collar 44, loose on the spindle 19, is rotated by a lever 45 which moves along the inclined wall 46 of a V-shaped recess in a bridgepiece 47, and brings the V-shaped projections on the collars into line with corresponding recesses 17 in the end of the fixed mandrel 18. The head can then be rotated to bring the new tool into operation and the head is then locked by a reverse movement of the lever 45 which, as the projection leaves the recess 17, pushes a fixed collar on the spindle 19 to the right. The head is shown with four arms 22 - - 24 to carry four tools which are clamped by plates 28 secured by T-headed bolts 30 and set-screws 27. Other tools may be secured in holes 32 in the head by set-screws 33.
