Abstract

Gyroscopic composes.-In a gyroscopic compass, two gyroscopes are provided, one of them having its axis constrained to move in an horizontal plane, and having two degrees of freedom, so that when in equilibrium it lies in the meridian, and the axis of the other being free to move in a vertical plane which is constrained to move in azimuth with the axis of the first gyroscope, and pointing when in equilibrium to the celestial pole. A dial may be carried by the axle of the casing of the second gyroscope to indicate the latitude. The gyroscopes may be mounted in a frame which does not permit of relative movement in azimuth, or as shown in Fig. 3 the axis of the first gyroscope 5 may be mounted in a frame 7 carried by axis 11 in a frame 9 carrying the second gyroscope 6. A spring 8 connects the frame 9 and the axis 11, and a spring 10 carried by the frame 9 bears on the axis 11 ; these springs being provided to damp the relative and the common oscillations of the gyroscopes. In a construction for applying a latitude correction to the first gyroscope 12, Fig. 6, the frame 16 carrying the gyroscope 12 is mounted on a pivot 16<b> carried by the frame 17 in which the ring 13<a> carrying the second gyroscope 13 is pivoted. A grooved cam disk 14 mounted on a trunnion of the ring 13<a> transmits motion to the frame 16 through a lever 15 pivoted at 15<a>. Specification 9693/05 is referred to.
