Abstract

1,144,375. Moulding yeast. DISTILLERS CO. (YEAST) Ltd. 30 Oct., 1967 [1 Nov., 1966], No. 48814/66. Heading B5A. Compressed yeast blocks are produced by extrusion of lengths of the required cross-section thereof into aluminium or plastics troughs 2 of "U"-shaped cross-section, a plurality whereof are mounted in axially extending alignment around the circumference of a cylinder 5 which is mounted for intermittent rotation about a shaft 6, by means of a pneumatically operated ratchet 9, whereby successive troughs 2 are brought into alignment with a yeast extrusion apparatus and die 1. The cylinder 5 also reciprocates axially to bring the troughs into and out of contact with the apparatus 1. When the trough 2 is filled a stop at the end thereof acts to halt the extrusion, to operate a pneumatically actuated cutter 8 to sever yeast from the die and to operate mechanisms for axial and rotational displacement of cylinder 5. Cutting wires 4, or nylon threads, extend around part of the periphery of cylinder 5, passing through opposed apertures 3 in each trough 2 whereby the yeast is cut into blocks which are deposited on to an intermittently operated conveyer 7 for transport to wrapping means. The dimensions of the extruding die and position of the cutting means 4 are adjustable.
