Abstract

1,144,167. Rubber laminates. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 29 Nov., 1966 [7 Dec., 1965], No. 51745/65. Heading B5N. An elastomeric block composition having the general formula A-(B-A) n , in which A represents a non-elastomeric polymer block, e.g. of styrene or a substituted styrene, having a second-order transition temperature greater than 25‹ C., and a number average molecular weight of 200 to 10,000, and B represents an elastomeric polymer block, e.g. of butadiene or isoprene, a butadiene-styrene copolymer or an ethylene-propylene terpolymer, having a number average molecular weight of 25,000 to 1,000,000 and a glass transition temperature below 10‹ C., and n is 1 to 10, is bonded to an elastomeric composition differing therefrom, being a natural rubber composition, a composition of a copolymer of butadiene and styrene or a polychloroprene composition by applying the block copolymer composition to the different copolymer composition, heating the assembly under pressure until the block copolymer softens, and then cooling whilst maintaining pressure. The elastomer compositions may contain fillers, antioxidants, antiozonants, anti-flex cracking agents and extender oils. The bonding suitably takes place at 120‹ to 180‹ C. and 100 p.s.i. The example describes the use of the block copolymer in sheet form for bonding together rubber sheets.
