In prepayment television or radio, the receiving station has a coin-actuated device 6 to provide credit so that switches 50 can be actuated by an on-off knib 10 to operate the television, and also has a relay 30 which is sensitive to impulses from the transmitting station and is arranged to cancel the credit depending on the frequency of the impulses. The device 6 operates to rotate spindle 19, at the rear of which is a pinion 23 coacting with a gear-wheel 45 which turns, via gears 47, 48, two cam discs 40, 41. Cam disc 40 has a gradual change of radius whereas cam disc 41 has an operative part with a sudden radius change, the two discs being connected by a pin in a slot. They engage pin 54 to pivot lever 51, whereby switches 50 are moved in the closing direction if credit is available whilst providing a positive opening of the switches in the initial or " nocredit " position. The knob 10 operates two further cam discs 60, 61 to move, via bell-crank 61, the lever 51 to close or open switches 50 if the cams 40, 41 are in the " credit available " position. A pointer 69 moves with cams 40, 41 to indicate the credit available and a pin 70 is arranged to engage a stop 71 to limit the amount of credit. To cancel the credit as the television is operated, a relay 30 is responsive to impulses sent out from the transmitting station to move ratchet-wheels 28, 29 to rotate spindle 32. A gear 39 on this spindle engages with a differential gear 24 on spindle 19 to turn the pinion 23 and gear-wheel 45, and hence the cams 40, 41, in the opposite direction to that of the coinactuated device to return the cams 40, 41 to the initial " no-credit " position. A quantity mechanism 15, 16 can be incorporated so that different sizes of coins can be used and a coin counter 72 may be provided.
