Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A web 1 is formed into a tube, of which at least the inner side is provided with a layer of heat sealable material 10, in such a way that the free longitudinal edges 2, 3 thereof are kept substantially parallel to one another and are brought into overlapping relationship to provide a substantially wedge-shaped gap 4, a warm gas jet is directed into the mouth of the gap 4 and the edges 2, 3 are pressed together, e.g. by rolls, in overlapping relationship to form a seam after the warm gas has heated the heatsealable material. The warm gas jet is provided by a nozzle 6 having a mouth in the form of a narrow longitudinal slit 5 preferably equal in length to the tube length. Cold air is heated by an element (7), Fig. 1 (not shown), in the nozzle 6. The nozzle 6 may be swingable about the axis of the heating element (7) or may be moved to a position (6<SP>1</SP>) if the machine is stopped so that sealing may be effected again immediately on restarting the machine. The web 1 may comprise a paper or cardboard layer 8 covered by layers 9, 10 of which at least the layer 10 is a thermoplastic material or may be an entirely heat-sealable plastic material and is formed into a tube by feeding through forming rings with or without the use of internal guides. Sealing may be effected continuously in which case the web 1 is fed past the nozzle 6 with a constant velocity.
