Abstract

1,143,533. Collagen. FMC CORP. 15 Feb., 1966 [1 March, 1965], No. 6641/66. Heading C3H. A water-insoluble collagen composition capable of forming a stable aqueous dispersion is microcrystalline and at least 10% by weight thereof consists of bundles of aggregated tropocollagen units forming particles whose maximum direction in any direction is less than one micron, and is substantially free of individual tropocollagen units and degraded derivatives thereof. The composition may be made by uniformly distributing an aqueous solution of an acid having a pH of 1À6 to 2À7 through a body of undenatured collagen, and comminuting the mass until at least 10% is of the desired particle size. The acid may be hydrochloric acid; acetic, cyanoacetic and hydrobromic acids may be used with some difficulty; sulphuric acid is not suitable. The collagen source may be cowhide, calf hide, moose hide, pigskin, sheepskin or goatskin. A 1% dispersion of the composition forms a thixtropic gel and may be used in waterpaints. The composition may be crosslinked with tanning agents or with cellulose.
