A dentifrice composition comprises, as active ingredient, a compound of the formula wherein R and R<SP>1</SP>, which may be the same or different, are each hydrogen or an alkyl group and Ï represents a phenyl group substituted with halogen and/or hydroxy group(s) and/or an alkali metal salt thereof. A local anaesthetic such as procaine may be present and the dentifrice may suitably be in the form of a paste, e.g. toothpaste or gum massage paste or a cream.
