Abstract

1,143,288. Refrigerators; liquefied gas storage vessels. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 29 Sept., 1966, No. 43562/66. Headings F4H and F4P. A heat insulated container (Fig. 1) comprises outer and inner shells 1, 2 having an evacuated space 3 therebetween, insulation 4 in space 3 and reinforcing members 5 which extend between shells 1 and 2 and are formed of fibre glass material, the fibres thereof being arranged with their longitudinal axes perpendicular to the direction of heat leak into the container. Insulation 4 comprises alternate layers of heat reflecting and insulating materials and members 5 are preferably cylindrical and composed of a stack of discs which are glued together or held in a fabric sleeve. Alternatively, the members are composed of stacked rectangular layers which are laced together (Fig. 6, not shown). The container may be used for storing liquefied gas, e.g. nitrogen, or perishable articles and in the latter case is provided with shelving and a refrigerating machine. The container may be formed of individual double-walled panels (Fig. 2, not shown) of which one or both walls may be plane or corrugated, the reinforcing members having a heat reflecting wrapping. An adsorbent is provided in space 3 to maintain the vacuum therein. In a further embodiment (Fig. 3) the outer shell 50 encloses two inner containers 51, 52 for liquefied nitrogen and stored goods respectively, fibreglass reinforcing members 54 being disposed between the containers as well as between the containers and shell 50. Container 51 is pressurized or heated to supply nitrogen to a spray pipe 64 in container 52. A section 58 of butyl rubber joins the end of container 52 to shell 50 and may be protected by a hinged flap 60 during loading; a door 59 with polyurethane foam or vacuum insulation is provided. In another embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown), the reinforcing members comprise superimposed slabs of fibre glass interposed between the layers of the multi-layer insulation. Preferred materials for the multi-layer insulation, the container walls and the gas adsorbent are listed as well as preferred dimensions. The containers may be provided with heating means for storing goods at above ambient temperatures.
