[Also in Divisions B1 and C1] In the gas phase catalytic synthesis of methanol in which a stream of hydrogen and carbon oxide, as " reactant," is continuously introduced as a main feed at the inlet end of the catalytic bed or series of beds and reacted mixture is continuously removed at the outlet end and in which the temperature is controlled by injecting a quench feed of warm reactant intermediately into the catalyst bed, part of the reacted mixture leaving the catalyst is cooled in a main heat exchanger by heat exchange with warm reactant, whereby the latter is heated to the temperature required at the inlet to the catalyst bed to which it is then fed, and part of the reacted mixture is cooled by heat exchange with water in a boiler and the residual heat of the total reacted mixture is used to heat cool reactant to the warm reactant temperature to provide the warm reactant required for the main feed and quench streams. By " cool " is meant a temperature below 50‹ C. and " warm " a temperature between 50‹ C. and that at which the reactant enters the catalyst bed. Desirably, at least 20% by vol. of the total reactant is used as quench feed which is introduced at 2-5 intermediate points. Suitable apparatus for the process is described.
