Abstract

1,142,538. Polymerizing lactones. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 10 Nov., 1967, No. 51201/67. Heading C3R. Pivalolactone is polymerized in the presence of a cationic initiator which is a complex of a Lewis acid and a trihydrocarbylmethyl chloride. Specified complexes are those of the halides of Zn, Cd, Hg, B, Al, Ge, In, Ti, Sn, Pb, P, V, Sb, Bi, As, Fe, Co or Ni and triphenylmethyl chloride. Up to 50 mol per cent of the pivalolactone may be replaced by beta-propiolactone, alpha, alpha-diethyl-beta-propiolactone or alpha - methyl - alpha - ethyl - beta - propiolactone. Polymerization is effected at - 50‹ to +300‹ C. by a bulk process or in a hydrocarbon diluent.
