Abstract

1,142,233. Alkyl phenols. THOMPSONHAYWARD CHEMICAL CO. 20 Jan., 1967 [24 Jan., 1966], No. 3085/67. Addition to 1,130,272. Heading C2C. The invention relates to a method for preparing monoalkyl phenol compounds of the general formula. wherein X is an alkyl group having from 3 to 24 C atoms; which comprises: (A) Incorporating into the phenol starting material from 0À1 to 10% by weight of a catalyst agent; (B) Elevating the temperature of the resultant mixture to a temperature in the range 70-100‹ C. in the absence of oxygen; (C) Alkylating the mixture by adding thereto in the absence of oxygen and at the elevated temperature not more than a stoichiometric amount of an olefin reagent having from 3 to 24 C atoms in the molecule; (D) Removing before cooling from the alkylated mixture excess reactants and the catalyst agent; and (E) Cooling the resultant product prior to exposure thereof to oxygen to a temperature below 50‹ C., to yield the desired mono alkyl phenol compound. The catalysts may be volatile acid catalysts or volatile metal halide catalysts.
