Abstract

1,142,071. Polyamide fibres and filaments. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 9 Feb., 1966 [9 Feb., 1965], No. 5715/66. Heading B5B. [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] Polyamide articles are produced by extruding into an aqueous medium an alk. metal salt solution of a polyamide comprising more than 30 units of formula: where R is methylene, a C 2-8 polymethylene radical, or m- or p-phenylene, A is carbonyl, sulphone, methylene, C 2-8 polymethylene, oxygen or dimethyl or diphenyl methylene and n is 0 or 1, said alk. metal salt containing 0À04-2 alk. metal atoms per unit. The polyamide may be prepared by reacting the corresponding diaminobisphenol with the acid fluoride, chloride or bromide of the corresponding dicarboxylic acid in a solvent containing a hydrogen halide acceptor. Diamines and dicarboxylic acids specified include: 3,3<SP>1</SP>-diamino- 4,4<SP>1</SP>- dihydroxydiphenyl, 2,2-bis(3-amino-4- hydroxyphenyl) propane, bis(3-amino-4-hydroxylphenyl)sulphone, adipic acid, and iso- and terephthalic acids. The salt may be prepared by dissolving the polyamide in an alk. metal hydroxide solution, e.g. an NaOH solution. Extrusion of the resulting solution into an acid medium e.g. HCl or H 2 SO 4 produces an extruded article of the polyamide itself. Polybenzoxazoles may be prepared by heating this. The invention is used to extrude films and fibres from which fabrics may be made.
