Abstract

1,141,815. Forming fibrous webs. OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORP. 14 July, 1966 [15 July, 1965], No. 31699/66. Headings DIN and D1R. Fibrous mat-producing apparatus comprises a garnett machine having a toothed drum 14 arranged to card a continuous supply of fibres, a means 19, 21 for projecting a flat air stream in a horizontal or slightly downward sloping path adjacent a surface portion of the drum, a means for discharging fibres into the air stream, a fibre stream guiding spout which is horizontal or slightly downward sloping, nozzles 40 for projecting binder into both sides of the stream of fibres beyond the outlet of the spout and a foraminous conveyor 36 having suction means to draw the fibres against the conveyor surface. The air stream may emerge from an elongated spout 19. The peripheral speed of the cylinder 14 can be at least 1500'/min., e.g. 8600'/min. Roller 24 prevents "hang-up" of the fibres at the edge of the lower wall of the spout. The stream of fibres passes through expanding spout 27 and past adjustable directing louvres 29 and 30. Spouts 20 and 27 are preferably made of an acrylic plastics material and may be two inches and six inches in height respectively. The atomising nozzles 40 may be no more than 5" apart. The conveyor 36 passes through a hood 34 which has openings (55, 57, 58) in its top and upper side walls, see Figs. 4 and 5 not shown. Dampers (37) in the suction chamber can vary the amount of air drawn through different parts of the conveyor. The fibre mat then passes through a curing oven and is then comprressed. The fibres can be glass fibres. The binder can be an aqueous solution of phenolformaldehyde resin in the "A" state of polymerisation.
