Abstract

114,174. Morris, D. K. Feb. 24, 1917. Influence machines. -The mutual repulsion of charged particles or carriers in electrostatic generators is utilized to limit the voltage generated. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, particles of ,sand or other carriers leave an earthed receptacle a by a nozzle b which is surrounded by an insulated and negatively charged ring c. The carriers thus positively charged fall normally into the positive receiver d but, if excessively charged, they are deflected by mutual repulsion so as to pass outside the receiver d. The ring c is extended below the receiver d to discharge such carriers. The lucing field is thereby weakened and the receiver d is maintained at a constant voltage. The apparatus may be made symmetrical about an horizontal axis so that it can be used with either end uppermost. In a modified apparatus, the particles falling from the receiver d as well as those deflected outside it may fall into an earthed funnel, whose orifice is surrounded by a ring connected with the receiver d. The apparatus may be constructed to facilitate the return of the particles of sand etc.; for continuous operation, it may be made rotatable about an horizontal axis. To limit the voltage of other types of influence machine, the receiver above described may be connected to the exciter or other part of the machine.
