Abstract
1,141,502. Driving trailers. C. W. SEWELL. 10 June, 1966 [12 March, 1965], No. 10617/65. Heading B7H. An articulation system comprises a pair of articulated bodies, such as a touring vehicle 10 and trailer 13, a rotary driving transmission member 28 on one body and a rotary driven transmission member on the other body interconnected by first and second universal joints 27 and 17 and two further transmission members 26 and 18, which are connected by a third universal joint 25, and linkage connecting one of the further transmission members to one of the bodies to constrain the transmission members so that upon a predetermined angular articulation of the bodies the transmission members move to predetermined positions this movement being accompanied by smaller relative angular articulations of the transmission members with respect to one another and one or both of the driving and driven transmission members. As shown the vehicle 10 and trailer 13 are articulated to one another by a hook 11 which is pivotable about a longitudinal axis of the vehicle 10 and an eye 12 and the transmission drives the axle 15 of the trailer 13. The linkage (Fig. 4) comprises a support bearing 29 supporting member 18 for pivoting about a diametral vertical axis 30<SP>1</SP> in a yoke 32 which is pivotable about a horizontal axis 35 in a member 36 which is pivotable about a vertical axis 42<SP>1</SP> in a cross member 22 of the trailer chassis. To accommodate changes in the length of the transmission during articulation either member 18 includes a telescopic joint 19 or the driving or driven transmission member is movable with respect to its body.
