Abstract

1,141,501. Woodworking. W. I. MOORE, and A. DIAMOND. 4 April, 1966 [19 Feb., 1965], No. 7376/65. Heading B5L. Apparatus for cutting, such as tapering, timber posts comprises a frame 11, a carriage 10 for movement along the frame, at least one pair of cylindrical cutter heads 12, each head being mounted on and arranged for movement in a direction normal to the direction of movement of the carriage, a prime mover 17 for each cutter, clamping means 29 located on the carriage for clamping the timber to be cut, and adjustment means associated with each cutter to adjust the distance between the cutter heads. The carriage 10 is of generally trapezoidal shape having an upper surface 19 and a plurality of wheels 26 engaging a pair of guide rods 25 disposed between two pairs of boring bars 24, the carriage being movable along the rods by an hydraulic motor 22. A bearing 18B is mounted on the inner ends of each of the bars 24, and each bearing supports a pivot for a lever plate 15, each plate carrying a spindle 13 which carries a cutter 12 having a plurality of blades 12A arranged in overlapping stepped formation and is driven by a belt 16 from a motor 17 mounted on the plate. A rod 34 is adjustably connected to each plate 15 by nuts 38 and has an upstanding roller 32, the rollers 32 of the pair of plates 15 on one side of the machine engaging one of a pair of spaced guide rails 27 mounted on the carriage 10, the other rail being engaged by the rollers 32 of the pair of plates on the other side of the machine. The guide rails, which are of inverted U-cross-section, are at one end 20A secured to the carriage but at the other end adjustably secured so that the rails may be parallel or inclined to one another. In the latter case, when the carriage is moved by the hydraulic jack 22 along the guide rods 25, the movement of the guide rods 27 causes movement of the rollers 32 and hence pivoting of the plates 15 to vary the spacing between the cutters during movement of the carriage to form a taper on the timber. The timber is loaded on the machine by a device 22A which is movable by an hydraulic jack 36 and has a pair of V brackets 33 which engage chucks 35A, 35B, Figs. 2, 3A, 3B, previously secured to the timber. After delivery by the device 22A, the timber is initially supported at one end on an L-shaped bracket 40A having a roller 41A on a head 30 on one end of the carriage, and at the other end is supported on a similar bracket and roller 40B, 41B on a head 31 on the other end of the carriage. The bracket 40A is carried by a rod 42A urged to an extended position on the head 30 by springs 44, and the bracket 40B is mounted with a centre 29B on a rod 42B which is extendable in the head 31 by an hydraulic jack 60. When the jack is extended, the chucks 35A, 35B resting on the brackets are engaged by the centres 29A, 29B. An indexing mechanism 63 is mounted above the head 31 and at each retraction of the carriage engages a spindle 62, Fig. 2, extending from the rod 42A to effect a 90 degree indexing of the timber, the indexing being effected by guiding of the spindle along a V-shaped passage. In another embodiment, the movement of the carriage is effected by a cable, the cutter heads comprise assemblies of circular saw blades, the centre supporting the timber at the forward end of the carriage is vertically adjustable, and the indexing movement is effected by mechanically rotating the other centre through 90 degrees.
