Abstract

1,140,940. Trenching apparatus. TONE BORING K.K. 29 Aug., 1967 [9 Nov., 1966], No. 39497/67. Heading E1F. Trenching apparatus .comprises an. excavator 10 having a series of vertical drills with overlapping bits 32 arranged in a common plane. The excavator is suspended from a tower 11 and its depth controlled by a winch 12; the load in the supporting cable 17 is indicated by an indicator at 18. In operation the excavator drills a trench which is the same length as the excavator and is then raised and the tower moved in order to drill another trench, e.g. in line with the first. Twisting of the excavator .during drilling is detected by an indicator 80 (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) in which the cable 17 passes through an eye (83) which moves a pointer over a scale (90) as the cable moves away from the desired plane of the trench. The excavator has electric motors 30 driving, the drills through bevel gears. About half of the drills (four out of seven as shown) rotate in one direction, and the rest in the other, to minimise twisting. Water is supplied through. bores in the lower drills and their shafts by a pump 14, and mud is withdrawn through bores in the upper drills and their shafts by a pump in a mud separator.
